With a raving bar scene, Playa del Carmen inevitably has its fair share of petty theft and robberies. Everything is a tourist trap. The prices are ridiculous and the worst thing is that you don't get what you pay for and it's a frustration. I stay out late, walk home alone and have never had an issue. Stay in the tourist (centro) area and you'll be fine.
